Chapter 18 She is Engaged
Noel stood up and went to have a look for his son’s sake.
Annabel’s heart ached as well looking at Jaden, she tried to comfort him, "My dear son, let’s just let her be if she doesn’t even want to come by. It doesn’t necessarily have to be her, we can find another person, she doesn’t even care about you.
"No, mom. You don’t understand. I’ve wronged Fern and I must apologize to her. I won’t be able to do so if I let her go and she gets married to a rich man," said Jaden even though he believed that Fern didn’t have a sugar daddy.
But he wasn’t sure if Fern didn’t have a change of heart. When he saw Khalid the other day, he was certain that Khalid was nowhere better than him, even so, he wasn’t confident that Fern won’t waver, if she were to be courted by Khalid.
"Did she really break up with you for money?" Annabel asked angrily.
"Well, I have not agreed to that and hence no, we are not over yet. Not to mention that I am only injured because of her, there’s no way that she’ll just leave me like this," said Jaden desperately.
In Khalid’s office, his assistant was reporting to him about Jaden’s injury.
The atmosphere around the office went down a few degree Celsius as Khalid listened to his assistant quietly. The assistant pulled up his collar as he shivered from the cold atmosphere.
"The little girl has not heard of this matter, yes?" Khalid asked, his gaze frosty.
"No, she hasn’t. The people who were trying to reach out to her were halted by our people that you’ve dispatched," he and the bodyguards would definitely be fired if they couldn’t even handle such a simple matter, the assistant thought to himself.
Khalid nodded plainly, "Buy a flower bouquet and visit Jaden, also hand my business card to his parents. With this, they will know who I am."
The assistant didn’t understand the reason behind Khalid’s action. But there was no reason to question, all he had to do was to follow his instructions.
Jaden waited until late at night, but Fern was still nowhere to be seen. Instead, a bespectacled, polite and gently looking man appeared.
"Good evening, I am Hector Howard, Mr. Marsh’s assistant," Hector Howard hand over a business card, not his, but Khalid’s.
Annabel received it and glanced at it, she was at a loss. So were Noel and Jaden.
"I forgot to mention, Mr. Marsh is Miss Woods’ fiance. I am here to see Mr. Mccarthy under his order," Hector smiled and pushed his glasses, he then bowed and was going to leave.
The Mccarthy family was shocked, they couldn’t react to the situation.
Annabel snapped out of it and yanked Hector, who was leaving, "What do you mean? Fern’s fiance? Since when?"
"There is no need to concern about the details, what’s important to note is that, Miss. Woods is currently engaged to Mr. Marsh. From now on, she won’t be associating with Mr. Mccarthy anymore, please do keep that in mind," Hector pushed Annabel’s hand away, he then turned around and left.
He took an abrupt U-turn as he reached the front door, he then said to the puzzled Mccarthy family, "One more thing, Mr. Marsh requested that if you have any questions, please don’t bother Miss Woods and talk directly to him instead."
Fern didn’t have class today, she planned to laze at home and do nothing. She was looking for a part-time job but to no avail, it was tough to get a job because her schedule was inconsistent, so she might as well rest for the day.
Khalid’s mansion was excellent in every way, but she just couldn’t feel at ease.
Last night, she wanted to ask about staying at the school dorms but Khalid didn’t give her the chance to.
Since she had so much free time on hand, she should prepare herself and ask again tonight properly, she thought to herself.
"First things first! I should make Mr. Marsh an extravagant dinner. He will absolutely be touched seeing that I prepared him dinner, especially after a full day of work. Then, he will no doubt give a thought to the requests that I’m about to make. "
Fern took out her planner and was talking to herself in the mirror.
Khalid wouldn’t usually head home during the lunch break, but he decided to do so because Fern’s driver informed him that Fern didn’t have class today.
Fern was too absorbed in her planning and didn’t notice Khalid. He wasn’t even being quiet and he was already standing in front of her door.
"Secondly, how can I request wanting to go live in the school dorms, naturally, politely and not sounding presumptuous?" Fern hovered in front of the mirror, she squeezed her chin lost in thought.
After a few steps, she held her pen and started doodling on the paper, sketching out her master plan.
Then, she threw away the pen and stood in front of the mirror again.
"Mr. Khalid, you are a man of graceful elegance, it’s like you ascended from heaven. Every move you make strung my heart along… Nope, too cringy. Besides it’s probably not possible to say it to his stern face, I’ll have to correct this," Fern got goosebumps just thinking about it.
"Let’s be real and more sincere," Fern cleared her throat and said, "Mr. Marsh, you are a kind-hearted and handsome man, surely you must understand my distress. It’s not that I don’t want to stay here, but it is much more convenient for me to live in the school dorms. Plus, the driver is getting old, for him to fetch me up and down like that every day..."
Fern sighed like a deflated balloon, she couldn’t finish reading her script.
"It’s too fake, I couldn’t even stand it myself. What nonsense about the driver getting old and driving up and down. It is his job to drive up and down, it would be bad for him if he didn’t have to drive around. Using others as an excuse when in reality I don’t really want to stay here myself.
Oh lord, what do I do, why does life have to be so hard…" Fern fell apart, she flung her planner away and was going to roll around on her bed to let out her frustrations.
The planner flew elegantly towards the door and landed beautifully on Khalid’s hand, who was watching the whole time.
"Oh no!" Fern caught a glimpse of Khalid but was already on the track of running into her bed.
This caused her to lose momentum and she ran into the corner of the bed instead. The mattress was sturdy and a red mark immediately appeared on her snow-white skin.
Khalid had a lot of questions to ask, but seeing that she hurt herself, he quickly strode forward and helped her up.
"You klutz," Khalid removed Fern’s hand that was covering her forehead, gently rubbing the pain away.
"When did you get back, Mr. Khalid? You were as quiet as a mouse, you scared me to death! Luckily I ran into the mattress and not the cupboard or the table. I would be so dead otherwise," Fern ran her mouth first.
"Oh, it’s my fault now," Khalid forced himself not to laugh out loud.
"Of course, try standing in my shoes!" Fern was upset, aloof, she rejected Khalid’s help and sulked at the corner of the bed, refusing to stand up.
Khalid didn’t force anything, he just said plainly, "Well, I’m afraid there’s not going to be a second chance," he threw Fern’s planner on the bed after finishing his sentence.
What he really meant was that no person other than Fern would do something like this to him, and neither that he would let Fern do something similar again.
It wasn’t like it was his first time seeing Fern’s plan in action. Khalid saw it one other time when she was planning something at his hotel.
"I have a question," said Khalid.
"Can I say no?" Fern retorted.
Khalid shook his head, "Is planning to ask me to let you stay in the school dorms as difficult as planning to sleep with me?" Was it really that hard of a request, that she needed to write down her plans in her planner?
"Of course, Mr. Marsh. Well, seeing that I’m being so serious and sincere about it, would you agree to let me stay in the school dorms?" Fern went with the flow and made her request. Even though things weren’t going as planned, she felt like now was a good time to ask about it.
"I disagree. My reason remains, staying here would save you from a lot of unnecessary trouble. Don’t think about it anymore," Khalid rejected her cleanly, and even tried to make her give up any future thoughts.
