Chapter 21Brayden
"Tell me what just happened." Khalid was a little angry. To punish the bodyguard for interrupting them, he hadn’t even asked him to get in the car and had him stood outside and told him what had happened. The bodyguard nodded respectfully. Then he told Khalid exactly what had happened when Jaden had waited for Fern outside the library until Jaden had fallen down the stairs. Fern, who was playing dead on the side, felt more and more weird as she listened, "Mr. Marsh, you actually let someone follow me. You’re so despicable!" The bodyguard swallowed. Anyone who dared to talk to Khalid like that was either Khalid’s lover or seeking dead. Obviously, Fern belonged to the former. And Khalid was so used to hearing her talk like that that he didn’t lift an eyelid. "All right, I get it. You can go. Let me know the results when you’re done with it." Khalid waved his hand and told the bodyguard to get out of here. When the bodyguard left, Khalid looked at Fern who was staring at him like a ferocious animal. He explained, "If I don’t let people follow you, how are you going to handle a situation like today? And the fact that you were going to be fired before. Even worse, what are you going to do if your identity comes out and you get blocked by the media?" Fern opened her mouth but couldn’t say anything to retort. "If you don’t like it, I’ll tell them not to follow you. But you must call me first if something happens!" That was what Khalid was most angry about. So far, no matter what happened, Fern wouldn’t think of him as her fiancé. "All right. If there’s really something I can’t fix, I’ll call you." Fern pulled her phone out, "Go ahead, what’s your number? I’ll save it." Yes. She was living at Khalid’s house and she didn’t even have his cell phone number! The nurse came out of the emergency room of the hospital and spoke to Noel and Annabel, "The patient has suffered multiple blows to the brain, which caused massive intracranial bleeding. He will now have to be operated on, so please go to the payment office and pay your bills immediately." They were so worried that they rushed with the nurse to pay the bill. Fortunately, they just got a million from Khalid, or else they wouldn’t even be able to afford the surgery now. But having a million didn’t help much, because Jaden had fallen so badly. Surgery for an intracranial hemorrhage was only the first step. His leg, which was originally only slightly broken, was completely broken, and he also had a shattered hand that needed to be operated on. After several surgeries, half of the million yuan had been spent and Jaden was still in the ICU. As the days passed, the million yuan was dwindling as fast as the eye could see, as if it had been set on fire. Most importantly, Jaden hadn’t woken up after it was confirmed that his life wasn’t in danger. Doctors said there was a chance he would never wake up. But if he continued to stay in the hospital, his parents would need to pay a high daily bill. They couldn’t afford to pay and tried to go to Khalid, but were stopped by Khalid’s bodyguard who stayed at the hospital. "Mr. Mccarthy and Mrs. Mccarthy, when Mr. Marsh gave you the one million, he let you take Jaden and leave. You didn’t keep your promise. Now you’ve spent the one million, but you’re still here. For the sake of your son’s injury, Mr. Marsh has let you off the hook. But if you guys insist on pestering him, Mr. Marsh will consider suing you to pay back the money." The bodyguard said. The couple now had headaches hearing about money. They would like to steal and rob to get some money to pay for their son’s treatment. If they really get sued in court and have to pay back the one million, they may have to jump out of the building to end their lives. Frightened by the bodyguard’s words, the couple didn’t dare bother Khalid again. They got a car and drove Jaden out of City A, planning to go home and find a small clinic for him to recuperate slowly. In the big city, they had to spend money every day. Without an income, it was hard for them to survive, let alone pay for their son’s treatment. From the time Jaden was admitted to the hospital until his parents took him away, almost a week passed. Fern had no idea what had happened, except that the bodyguards were reporting to Khalid every day. All Fern knew was that Jaden wasn’t dead. She had no hatred for Jaden, as long as he didn’t bother her. It was none of her business whether he lived a good life or a hard one in a place where she couldn’t see him. With Jaden out of the picture, Fern had a sort of free life and groggy from class. Just as she was falling asleep, her seatmate screamed so loudly that she nearly fell under her chair. "Wow, my Goddess’s on live!" The male seatmate was lying on the table with his phone. He couldn’t wait to get into his phone and have a close encounter with the person on the screen. Fern just realized that class was over. She thought she hadn’t just fallen asleep and didn’t realize she’d slept straight through to the end of class. She took a curious look and noticed that her seatmate was watching a live feed of a beautiful woman. This beautiful woman had waist-length curly hair that was dyed blonde. Her face was as unrealistically beautiful as an illustrator’s drawing. "Dude, the filter is too obvious, isn’t it?" Fern leaned in and asked. She didn’t know much about filters either. She just simply thought that there was no such good looking woman in the world. She hadn’t even seen one on TV. "Don’t be ridiculous if you don’t know anything about her. Don’t insult my goddess. Okay? She never turns on the filter. This is her true face. Look carefully!" The table put the phone in front of Fern’s eyes so she could see it more clearly. Fern didn’t see the Goddess of her seatmate. Instead, she saw countless gifts flying in tandem with the pop-ups, which dazzled her. She quickly pushed the phone back. After school was over in the afternoon, Fern was sent back to the villa by the driver. She had no mood and really didn’t want to stay at Khalid’s. She had lived here for so many days but didn’t have a sense of belonging, which made her feel wobbly and unsettled. She still wanted to find a chance to talk to Khalid about moving out, but it would take a reasonable opportunity. With that in her head, Fern opened the door to the house without realizing it and looked up to find a woman sitting in the living room. A very pretty woman. Thinking she entered the wrong room, Fern exited the door and closed it swiftly. The whole process lasted no more than several seconds, and the woman sitting on the couch even didn’t react. Out the door, Fern took out her keys again and opened the door in a very serious and disciplined manner. The woman was still sitting on the couch, and the surprise on her pretty face hadn’t faded. As they stared at each other, Khalid came down from upstairs. Seeing this, the woman got up and went over to take Khalid’s arm. The woman whispered something in his ear. Then Khalid let her take him by the arm and they slowly went down the stairs. Fern’s jaw dropped to the floor in surprise and looked at the two persons with straight eyes, unblinking. "Khalid, who is she? Aren’t you going to introduce her to me?" The woman spoke. Her voice was a little cold and low, not as sharp as the average girl’s, but sounded comforting. "Fern," Khalid’s introduction was simple and direct. After introducing Fern, Khalid was about to introduce her to the woman. Fern got ahead of him and said, "I know. You’re Brayden, aren’t you?" She had seen her on her seatmate’s phone just before class ended. She had a very deep impression of the face. When she was her on the phone, she thought she was so beautiful because she had the filter on. Now seeing the real person, she realized how ignorant she was. She was even more beautiful in real life than on the phone! It wasn’t even too much to say that she was a fairy descending from the heavens. Even she was tempted, let alone a geek like her seatmate. Brayden was surprised that Fern knew her. Just as she was about to ask, she heard Fern say, "I’ve seen you live on my seatmate’s phone. You’re so pretty. So much prettier than on the phone!" Fern instantly transformed into a fan of her, and her eyes filled with stars. This time Khalid just shrugged off Brayden’s hand and went to sit on the couch. It wasn’t dinner time yet and the cook was still working in the kitchen. It would be a while before they could eat. Fern leaned in with excitement on her face and whispered to Khalid, "What’s your relationship with Brayden? You guys..." The fire of gossip burned in her eyes. Seeing her like this, Khalid was kind of wanted to hit someone. Brayden sat over as well. She just sat next to Khalid, and answered for him, "You’re Fern, aren’t you? I’ve seen the coverage of your interview with Khalid at the hotel. You’re cute too. Better than on camera." "Really?"Fern smiled apologetically. She then went to sit with Brayden on the other side of the couch and whispered in her ear what she had just asked Khalid again. Brayden’s expression immediately changed as she listened. She looked at Khalid in embarrassment and then said sadly, "Fern, you’re younger than me. Do you mind if I call you sister?" Fern shook her head. Of course she didn’t mind. She was lucky to have such a beautiful sister! "Sister, don’t be angry if I tell you the truth. I’ve been with Khalid for a long time, but don’t worry, I don’t care about the title. I will never ruin your marriage!" Brayden said.
